Five Pillars of Effective Practice and Coaching

Experience has shown there are five characteristics common to all successful programs. As experts in video-based practice, we find this to be true across a wide range of use-cases, scale, and industry verticals. After observing their prevalence, we dove deeper to define each and now refer to them collectively as the "Five Pillars of Effective Practice and Coaching". When designing new programs, mindful planning around each of the pillars will yield improved adoption, increased engagement throughout, and ultimately a greater impact.

01
Align Program
Arguably the most important, this first pillar determines direction and ultimately the success of skills coaching programs. You must first identify the desired outcome and define the skills needed in order to achieve it. With respect to those skills, it should also be made clear what “good” looks like. Lastly, expectations for all involved need to be set and clearly communicated.

Engage Leadership
This second pillar consists of obtaining support, showing engagement, and reviewing impact. Commitment from key leaders is critical not only for launch, but to keep programs top-of-mind throughout. Although it is expected that leaders will personally engage with the platform in limited scope, it is imperative they experience it.

03
Drive Accountability
Effectiveness of the program relies heavily on each role performing their responsibilities on time, with enthusiasm, and most importantly meeting expectations. While identifying accountability, communicating actions, and monitoring progress are important, they do not need to be completed in that order.

Showcase Results
Reviewing outcomes, identifying successes, and celebrating results are key in demonstrating return-on-investment, reinforcing commitment to the program, and paving the way to realize the value of video-based practice and coaching throughout the organization.

Elevate Culture
Deliberate and purposeful practice becomes cultural, not simply another training activity. Organizations that build a culture around practice and continuous improvement attract and retain the best talent. Executive backing, mentor development, and redefined training play key roles in elevating your organization's learning culture.
